Les Jardins du Carrousel

Paris, France

1990 - 1991

Project details

Les Jardins du Carrousel at the Louvre in Paris resulted from a competition in 1990.  These 3.6 hectare roof gardens were built on the initiative of President Mitterand on a new underground parking lot and exhibition rooms.

The project is a formal garden with a fanning pattern of twelve radial hedges and raised green chambers on both sides of the triumphant arch.  These hedges stand in a descending garden that is protected against the busy traffic and noise of Paris.

They frame the small arch as a gate to the Tuileries Garden and accommodate a collection of 20 statues by Maillol.  The garden was significantly affected by the drought in 2003 and is still being refurbished.
