The campus of the University of Antwerp was designed and built between 1970 and 1980. The campus was designed as a large park that weaves around the buildings. It separates the parking places outside the heart of the campus in a very curvilinear, naturally integrated manner and uses the idea of the moat as a barrier you have to cross to arrive in the campus.
The massive use of flowering shrubs and trees give a very vivid image the first half of the year. Extensive mounds, banks, a sunken grass theatre and the use of water create a strong new identity, integrated in the surrounding pastureland. Even the busy university hospital is absorbed by nature, steering cars and pedestrians between hedges and on curvilinear laid out roads.
