The Carrousel Gardens at the Louvre Museum in Paris were the result of a competition in 1990. It is a 3,6 ha rooftop garden, that was built on new underground parking and exposition halls, at the initiative of the Mitterrand presidency. The project is a formal garden consisting of a fan pattern of 12 radial hedges and elevated green rooms on both sides of the triumph arch. These hedges are set in a sunken garden being protected from the traffic noise and business of Paris. They frame the small arch as a real gate to the Tuileries gardens and house a collection of 20 Maillol sculptures. The garden was severely damaged in the drought of 2003 and is still under construction.
